But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. 2 Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God. They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.” Luke 5:24-26
As I was reading this scripture I found myself asking why did Jesus tell the man to take his mat with him?
The very thing that he was stuck on day and night. The very thing that he would have to be carried around on for all to see. The mat could remind him of all the days he missed out on, all the ways that he was weak and sick. Every time he looked at it he could be bitter in remembrance.
As I questioned this some more, it became quite clear to me. It is how you see it.
He could look back at the mat and see his past sickness, loss of time, or loss of the life he so desired. Or he could look back at the mat and recall the day he walked out of the house in front of the crowds with perfectly working legs. He could recall the day he got a touch from the Lord. The moment he stood up immediately, took what he had been laying on, and went home praising God. It is how we see it.
I wonder what you have been laying on. What set back, what sorrow, what sickness? Something you have been using as a crutch because you just can’t stand on your own. My friend, this man left walking not because He was strong enough. He stood tall because Jesus healed him. He stood tall because he got to the feet of the one who could make him new.
That same healing is available for you today. Go to Jesus in prayer ask Him to help you stand tall. Not alone but with His help. Not in your own strength but with His healing words. When He does free you, take your mat and turn it into your praise.
Every time you look at it, or every time you remember the days you were stuck longing for change remember what Jesus did for you.
I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works
and meditate on all your mighty deeds.” Your ways, God, are holy. What god is as great as our God? Psalm 77: 11-13
