Life has a way of shaking you to the core. Some of its trials can leave us dazed and confused, not knowing where to go next. While others can knock the wind out of us, leaving us breathless on the floor. We were not promised easy on this walk with Christ, but we are promised that Jesus will love us with an everlasting love. A love that is able to heal and mend brokenness. A love that protects and covers us. A love that endures even the most challenging obstacle.
When we are in the midst of crushing trials how is it possible to experience the love of Christ? How can we not only experience it but then give it to others as we are instructed? Feeling loved in the middle of heartache can be extremely difficult but it is achievable. It is possible because love is not just a feeling, it is a choice. Sometimes we must push past the pain and choose love. At times we must choose love despite the circumstances around us, despite what our own mind is telling us. We must choose love because Jesus first chose to love us in the midst of pain. He endured the cross not because He felt like it but because He was focused on His mission.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer, and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him, he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” (Hebrews 12:1-3)
This scripture shows us the key to enduring love! We must fix our eyes on Jesus, just like He fixed His eyes on the joy set before Him. Jesus fixed His focus on what God was calling Him to do, save us. He did not look at the agonizing pain He was about to be in, instead He looked above at the finish line.
We can experience this enduring love by focusing on Jesus. We can persevere by looking past the pain, the trauma, or the betrayal. We can not grow weary or lose heart because we are focused on a source that will not run out. We are focused on what Jesus is calling us to. We can have an enduring love because when we are weak He is strong. We set our eyes on Him and run with perseverance!
